01

Site background and contamination

Legacy mine operations left PCB- and petroleum-hydrocarbon-impacted soil. Incoming PCB concentrations were 5 to 10 ppm, requiring a contaminant-specific treatment and verification program.

Site
Remote gold mine, northern Ontario
Contaminants
PCBs at 5 to 10 ppm, plus petroleum hydrocarbons

02

Nelson’s role and treatment selection

Nelson supplied project management, the RS-45 and operations alongside the remediation contractor, consultants, analytical providers and mine owner. On-site mobile thermal desorption addressed the organic contaminants at the remote site.

Nelson role
Thermal remediation contractor under the Ontario approval

03

Equipment, handling and logistics

PCB-impacted and hydrocarbon-impacted soil were segregated and treated against their respective criteria. Mobilization and operating support had to accommodate the remote mine setting.

Equipment
RS-45 mobile direct-fire thermal desorption unit

04

Sampling, permits and verification

The mobile on-site treatment program operated under an Ontario Environmental Compliance Approval. PCB results were assessed against site-specific treatment criteria rather than a generic limit for all mine soils.

05

Documented outcomes

The material comprised 24,000 tonnes of PCB soil and 36,000 tonnes of hydrocarbon soil. Post-treatment PCB concentration was 0.3 mg/kg. The treated ground was regraded for natural revegetation.

Material quantity
60,000 tonnes handled: 24,000 t PCB and 36,000 t hydrocarbon soil
Result
PCBs at 0.3 mg/kg. Soil returned and the site regraded for revegetation
