PFAS Remediation in Manitoba

Manitoba's contaminated sites framework under the Contaminated Sites Remediation Act[1] does not yet publish PFAS-specific soil values, but PFAS is appearing on site assessments as an emerging contaminant, and Health Canada's drinking water objective for PFAS (sum of 25 PFAS at 30 ng/L)[2] is the downstream lens regulators are aligning to. Federal sites in Manitoba, including defence installations and airports, additionally fall under FCSAP[3].

AFFF source areas at airports, training grounds, and emergency response facilities are the highest-priority PFAS inventory in the province. Nelson's PFAS thermal work is at pilot and validation stage, carried out through a NATO-aligned test-bed program. It is not offered as a commercial PFAS treatment service.

PFAS molecules are built on carbon-fluorine bonds, the strongest single bond in organic chemistry. Landfilling, soil washing, and stabilization do not break those bonds. They concentrate the problem and move it downstream, a posture regulators in the US, EU, and Canada are now actively closing off.

Nelson's PFAS work is at pilot and validation stage, carried out through a NATO-aligned test-bed program. The RS-series platform, high-temperature desorption with a secondary oxidizer and engineered acid-gas treatment train, is the equipment under evaluation for PFAS matrices. Nelson does not offer PFAS treatment as a commercial service line.

The commercial record on that platform is hydrocarbons and dioxins, built over three decades. PFAS-specific monitoring, stack testing, and confirmation sampling are part of the pilot protocol rather than a delivered service.

Proof: Nelson's hydrocarbon and dioxin destruction track record (Tioga clean-soil return; Bear Hills award-winning program; sustained work on legacy dioxin residues in Vietnam) is the platform anchor. On PFAS, the NATO-aligned pilot is the current status. Pilot findings are discussed under NDA at scoping.

Mobilized from Acheson, Alberta. The fleet's proven commercial record is hydrocarbons and dioxins. PFAS enquiries are handled as pilot and treatability discussions.

Frequently asked

Does Manitoba require PFAS destruction today?
Manitoba has not promulgated a soil-specific PFAS standard; PFAS is treated as an emerging contaminant within the contaminated sites process[1]. Owners are characterising against a moving target.
Is the platform proven?
The RS-series equipment is the same platform with decades of hydrocarbon and dioxin destruction record. The PFAS-specific mandate is an active NATO-aligned pilot.

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)A family of thousands of synthetic fluorinated organics — including PFOA, PFOS, GenX, PFHxS, and AFFF constituents — defined by C-F bonds that resist conventional treatment and require destruction technologies to close a site.
